Johnny Longboats is a restaurant in Singer Island, FL that was named after the legend of Johnny Longboat. There is nothing that is for certain if this is just a myth or actual fact.
What is for certain was the hurricane. In the year 1928 a hurricane hit Palm Beach that was catastrophic. The wind speeds hit around 180 mph and the rains caused the Great Okeechobee Flood. There were at least 1,575 people dead because of the horrible storm and its aftermath. As the legend goes, Johnny Longboat was a poor fisherman that lived in Pleasant City. Once the storm had passed Johnny took his boat and poled in down through the water. It was then that he discovered that the bridge from Palm Beach Island was destroyed and could no longer be used. He went on the the shore and found that there were many people in need of help, transportation, and supplies. He worked continuously through the day and night providing that transportation across the water, and bringing back supplies to the people on the island. Johnny is said to have saved and provided necessities to many families, and was indeed a hero.
This is why he was chosen to have the restaurant name.
